Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation Announcement

We are pleased to announce that ACE  has retained Birmingham Opera Company in its NPO portfolio 2018 onwards with an uplift to underpin our ambitious artistic plans and sustainability.

The Power of Three

On our trail to LAZARUS, a landmark international new opera commission with composer Giorgio Battistelli and writer Sarah Woods, we have commissioned 3 new works by composers who have made Birmingham their creative home.

composers workshop

Each work by the 3 composers is written for 3 performers. Drawing on Birmingham Opera Company’s reputation as a creative powerhouse and mentored by Birmingham Opera Company and BCMG,  Susannah Self, Chloe Knibb and Yfat Soul Zisso take an account of Martin Luther King’s Peace March, snippets of found conversations on a journey through the city and one person’s struggle to achieve a perfect interaction with a stranger- each a unique take on having a second chance.  The world premieres will take place at Weekender Festival 23 and 24 September 2017.

DRUMS OF WAR  (Orazi e Curiazi)

Music by Giorgio Battistelli

Two drummer warriors battle to the death. With each brutal blow, primal hiss and howl, the Fallen spring to life.

Music by Giorgio Battistelli
100 voices unite in Giorgio Battistelli’s triumphant and beautiful choral work. 100 souls in pursuit of a happiness they never reached in life.

From La Scala, Milan to Birmingham Opera Company!

Gieorgio Battistelli

This is Giorgio Battistelli. He is Italy’s leading experimental composer.

His opera, Co2, on the future of our planet, premiered in 2015 at La Scala Milan, where so many great masterpieces were born.

Giorgio Battistelli, director Graham Vick and writer Sarah Woods are now part way through an 18-month creative odyssey to create a new opera for Birmingham - the world's 21st Century home to innovation in the art form. World Premiere March 2018 in Birmingham.

We have been exploring ideas with Birmingham volunteers and the new work, based on the myth of LAZARUS.
