Karlheinz Stockhausen

Karlheinz Stockhausen was born near Cologne in Germany on 22nd August 1928. He was a very influential composer throughout the second half of the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. His cycle of seven operas - Licht - was a major creative force in his life, taking over 20 years to complete. We are very excited to be premiering the first full performance of 'Mittwoch aus Licht' or 'Wednesday from Light' this year, on what would have been his 84th birthday. We're thrilled that the third section the Helicopter String Quartet will be streamed live on The Space too.

This is Transmission Control! As we embarked on our journey towards the world premiere of 'Mittwoch aus Licht' by Karlheinz Stockhausen, we realised that t was a golden opportunity to share more about the man, the show and the project with our audience. We approached The Space about transmitting the Helicopter String Quartet live on the site and it spiralled on! We want to share with you all the exciting backstage, background and back-breaking work it takes to produce Birmingham Opera Company's 'Wednesday from Light'.

There's so much to share about Stockhausen and his work that we have been putting together different strands of our Trail to Stockhausen. Spanning this site, The Space, Facebook, twitter, mixcloud and others we hope to bring you in to deeper contact with the piece and the people performing it. So come on in and welcome!
